Life science is a subject that explores the essentials of life through studying shape, structure, and function of life. It has a wide range of branches from molecular level to ecosystem. In the 21st century, life science has become most challenging and hot area of study due to striking development of molecular biology. Nowadays, our society is expressing ever-growing social, economical interests not only in the issues of applied science for example, serious disorders like cancer, anti-aging, and human cloning, but also in the areas of competition for scarce animal and plant resources and conservation of ecosystem. Thus, competent life scientists are much demanded and so the education.

With this in mind, we have high-priced experimental equipments such as electron microscope, fluorescence microscope, chemidoc system, 2D-elecreophoresis system and gene amplificator. Also, we have tissue culture facility, vivarium, research facility, microscope laboratory, animals and plants specimen room, plants nursery field, a ship for oceanographic exploration, GPS system and etc. Upon graduation, students proceed to government employee (Korea National Institute of Health, Rural Development Administration, National Institute of Biological Resources, Korea National Park and etc), research institutes financed by either government or private (National Cancer Center, Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, Samsung Medical Center, LG, SK research institute, and etc), large hospital laboratories, laboratories in pharmaceutical companies, bio venture companies, or high-tech life science businesses, agricultural, forestry and fishery businesses, medical, dental professional schools and etc.

Program Objectives

Life science is a comprehensive science study to understand survival of human beings, sanctity of life, and the significance of bio-environment. We aim to foster competent experts in the field who have hearts to contribute in the development of life science.

Education Programs

The education programs of the life science are required to take understanding life science, general biology and experiments and chemistry and experiments as fundamental subjects. The core subjects include cytology, plant sociology and experiments, animal comparative anatomy and experiments, organic chemistry and experiment and field studies for sophomores. Animal taxonomy, plant taxonomy, molecular biology, biochemistry, embryology, marine biology, resources phytology, physiology and experiments for juniors and seniors. Most core subjects are related to experiments, focusing on nurturing specialists ready to participate in research activities right after graduation.

Department Characteristics

The department is equipped with fluorescent microscopes for undergraduate students and researches which investigate locations and movements of proteins in cells, scanning electron microscopes which make digital images, imaging system which investigates immune reactions and genes, immunoassay analyzers which investigate interactions among molecules in cells, electrophorator which transmits genets into cells, 2D-gel electrophoresis system to analyze proteins, high pressure liquid chromatography system (HPLC) which separates molecules in cells, PCR for amplifying genes, as well as culture room for cells and tissues, animal breedings for medical experiments and plant experimental sites, ships and GPS for marine observations.
Also, the core researches of the department include researches on maritime ecosystem due to environmental changes, taxonomical researches at molecule and structural levels to secure major plant resources, neurological physiology, embryology and bio-clock researches and developing anti-cancer drugs and gene therapies through epigenetical researches., providing opportunities for undergraduates to experience latest researches. The graduates who utilized excellent facilities and took experiment-based classes have had jobs in national and private research institutes, bioengineering companies, medical associations, public agencies, agricultural companies and graduate schools to play an important role in developing life science.
